Selecting Bluegrass badge

Selecting Bluegrass

Students determine the three best Kentucky bluegrass cultivars to blend as a seeding mix for establishing a golf course fairway.

Program: PGM

Description:

Applying knowledge acquired from lectures, students must determine the three best Kentucky bluegrass cultivars for golf course fairways at a golf course location in the U.S., based on data aspects from the National Turfgrass Evaluation Program (ntep.org): overall quality rating and disease resistance (primarily dollar spot). Students will use the statistical analytical tool LSD to determine what cultivars are significantly different or not, consider seed availability and climatic zone of the golf course in their determination.

Value of the Badge:

Earning the Selecting Bluegrass badge indicates a student has the ability to select the proper Kentucky bluegrass cultivars to blend an appropriate mix for establishing a golf course fairway taking into consideration the overall quality rating and disease resistance of the cultivars, significant differences between cultivars, seed availability and the climatic zone of the golf course. Further, a student is able to support his/her cultivar selections.

Badge Criteria:

  1. Successfully complete the Selecting Bluegrass Cultivars Assignment with emphasis on the ability to select the best Kentucky bluegrass cultivars to blend as a seeding mix for establishing a golf course fairway by determining overall cultivar quality rating and disease resistance, considering seed availability and climatic zone of the golf course in Ohio State University’s HCS3475, Turf Management for Golf Course Managers.
