Teaching Experience

GTAs develop and teach courses as instructor of record.

Description:

Experience as an independent instructor of record in the classroom prepares graduate students for the job market and their later careers.

Value of the Badge:

GTAs earning the Teaching Experience badge teach courses as an independent instructor of record. Teaching, along with research and service, is a central mission of the faculty role. Teaching experience complements and positively impacts other areas of graduate training, particularly research (Feldon, et al, 2011). Gaining teaching experience as a graduate student enhances skills and provides important foundational experience for a career in higher education. Teaching experience is also valuable for non-academic careers, particularly those where communication/presentation skills and interacting with diverse audiences are important.

Badge Criteria:

  1. Teach autonomously as instructor of record in the Psychology Department at least twice (i.e., two terms) during enrollment in the graduate school at Ohio State. This teaching experience must be supervised by a course director/coordinator or another member of the faculty.

  2. Submit a “Summary of Teaching Responsibilities” for each course taught, describing all responsibilities and activities required for the course, along with a brief description of the course, course requirements, and the student population(s). Guidelines for preparing the Summary can be found here: http://ucat.osu.edu/professional-development/teaching-portfolio/responsibilities/#what
